SatNEx

(Satellite communication Network of Excellence).

The primary goal of SatNEx is to achieve long-lasting integration of the European research in satellite communications and to develop a common base of knowledge. SatNEx aims to build a European virtual center of excellence in satellite communications and to contribute to the realization of the European Research Area. A major aim of SatNEx is to rectify this fragmentation by bringing European research in Satellite Communications together in a durable manner. The creation of this centre via the network will enable critical mass and access to a range of expertise across Europe. Most importantly, SatNEx intends to produce a common platform with delivery via satellite for all partners who will use this as a means for integrated research, teaching and training - the SatNEx platform. Moreover, SatNEx aims to produce in collaboration with industry this vision and to maintain and update it during the lifetime of the project. The project has to be considered divided in two parts: SatNEx, and SatNEx-II, which is the logic continuation and improvement of the activities started in SatNEx.

Duration: SatNEx 01/01/2004-31/03/2006. Contract N. 507052; SatNEX-II 01/04/2006-30/09/2009. Contract N. 27393.

VOTOS

VOTOS is a Focus Topic in the Joint Activity 2410 (Access, Network and Transport Layer Trials) of SatNEx. The main issue is the analysis of the behavior of congestion control protocols over satellite networks, with particular attention to those systems that adopt the most recent Demand Assignment Multiple Access schemes, such as Skyplex Data, Amerhis, BGAN, etc.. Analitycal studies, simulations, emulations, and real trials are the fundamental features of this topic.

TDMA DAMA for ns-2

TDMA-DAMA for ns-2 is an implementation of DAMA (Demand Assignment Multiple Allocation) TDMA method for satellite networks. Its implementation, usage examples and validation are described in the paper:

A. Gotta, R. Secchi, F. Potortì Simulating Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation on Satellite Links, proceedings of the International Conference on Performance Evaluation Methodologies and Tools (Valuetools), WNS2 workshop, ACM, Pisa (IT), October 2006, no. 8.

As an application example that has been studied with this module, DAMATFRC is a fluidic model representation of the behaviour of a single TFRC flow on an otherwise unloaded satellite network with TDMA-DAMA architecture.

PERSONA

(PERceptive Spaces prOmoting iNdependent Aging).

PERSONA is one of the Integrated Projects funded by the European Commission within the VI Framework Programme for IST (Information Society Technologies) on Ambient Assisted Living for the Ageing Society. PERSONA- PERceptive Spaces prOmoting iNdependent Aging- aims at providing a scalable open technological platform to build a broad range of services for social inclusion, independent living and healthy lifestyle of Senior Citizens. It has started in January 2007 and will last 42 months. PERSONA technical platform will exploit and incorporate new emerging technologies: micro- and nano-electronics, embedded systems (e.g. as in smart textiles), Human Machine Interfaces (display technologies, natural language communication), Communication (e.g. body area network, wireless sensor networks), software, web & network technologies (e.g. tele-services), biosensors (to measure physiological data), embedded and distributed sensors (to observe activity patterns, nutrition, gait, sleep), energy generation and control technologies (energy harvesting), and intelligent software tools for decision support. PERSONA comprises the evaluation and validation in extensive test-beds and trials in three sites in Spain, Italy, and Denmark. The consortium, lead by Vodafone Omnitel, consists of more than 20 organizations from Italy, Spain, Germany, Netherland, Denmark and Greece.

Duration: 2007 - 2010. Contract N. 45459.

INTERMEDIA

(Interactive Media with Personal Networked Devices).

INTERMEDIA seeks to progress beyond home and device-centric convergence toward truly user-centric convergence of multimedia. The vision is The User as Multimedia Central: the user as the point at which services (multimedia applications) and the means for interacting with them (devices and interfaces) converge. Key to the INTERMEDIA's vision is that users are provided with a personalized interface and with personalized content independently of the particular set of physical devices they have available for interaction (on the body, or in their environment), and independently of the physical space in which they are situated. The approach to this vision is to investigate a flexible wearable platform that supports dynamic composition of wearable devices, an ad-hoc connection to devices in the environment, a continuous access to multimedia networks, as well as adaptation of content to devices and user context. INTERMEDIA's main goal is to generate a shared vision of user-centric multimedia services for modern nomadic people, who has high level of mobility and is connected to network for most of times. The main goal is achieved through three main objectives: 1)Vision toward device-free user-centric media environments; 2) Constructing multidisciplinary research groups; 3) Building a common platform with a vision towards semantic convergence. Duration: 2006-2010. Contract N. 38419.

universAAL

FP7 project, contract n. 247950

The potential benefits of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions are already clearly recognised, and societal trends indicate that they will be attractive to a large and increasing number of people. But uptake of such solutions has so far been limited. UniversAAL aims to reduce barriers to adoption and to promote the development and widespread uptake of innovative AAL solutions. It will benefit end-users (i.e. elderly people and people with disabilities, their carers and family members) by making new solutions affordable, simple to configure, personalise and deploy. It will benefit solution providers by making it easier and cheaper to create innovative new AAL services or adapt existing ones using a compositional approach based on existing components, services and external systems.

The vision of the project is that it should be as simple for users to deploy an AAL solution as it is today to browse Apple’s “App Store”, find an interesting mobile application and download it to your iPhone. universAAL will adopt the “store” concept, customizing it for AAL services. It will extend the concept by supporting multiple execution platforms, deployment to multiple devices/users, and allocation of local human resources.

The main objective of the project is to make it technically feasible and economically viable to conceive, design and deploy innovative new AAL services. To do this, we will:

produce a platform providing the necessary technical support, and acting as an open, common basis for both developers and end-users; carry out support activities promoting widespread acceptance and adoption of the platform. These activities form an integral part of the project and will start at an early stage. Start: 2010-02-01 End: 2014-01-31

DoReMi

FP7 Project, 2013-2016

Malnutrition, Sedentariness, and Cognitive decline are the main causes of morbidity and premature mortality. These three impairments will represent the target areas in DOREMI. The project aims to develop a systemic solution for older people, which is able to prolong their functional and cognitive capacity by empowering, stimulating and unobtrusively monitoring their daily activities. The project joins together the concept of prevention, centred on the older population with a constructive interaction between mind, body and social engagement. To fulfil these goals, food intake measurements and personalized metabolic control, exergames associated with social interaction stimulation, and cognitive training programs will be introduced to a group of older participants taking part in a pilot study. The project combines multidisciplinary research in the areas of serious games, social networking, Wireless Sensor Network, activity recognition and contextualization and behavioural pattern analysis. By recording and monitoring information about the use of the adopted lifestyle protocols, it will be possible to track the user performance over long periods, providing early warning of signs of malnutrition, physical and cognitive deterioration. The collaboration between healthcare representatives and experienced technology partners will drive the development of the different products to be validated in the pilot study. The effectiveness and impacts of these will be tested in the pilot study set up in Italy and UK, involving both older users and care providers.
